Managing is about setting goals and pushing people to achieve those (usually numeric) goals. Mentoring or coaching is about working to understand the person, and encouraging them to define their own Intentions of how they think they can learn, grow and contribute. Intentions are not directly about what the company wants or the persons role demands. Intentions are about the next few things they want to focus on to be successful. Often these are learning, improvement, or growth items. These could be result oriented but the focus on ReJoyos is the individuals growth and not “project or goal management”.

ReJoyos is designed to give individual full freedom to define their intentions and share them with whoever they want (along with their manager and manager’s manager). The idea of intentions it to help create the outcome in the persons mind, along with a bit of how they will do it, what kind of support they want and how the end result will look like. Intentions are not meant to be quantitative or have deadlines. Intentions should never be used to measure performance directly.

A great mentor / coach would meet their reportee frequently (say every two weeks or four weeks) and discuss what the reportee intends to focus on. Given them input on creating intentions and how it may all unfold in real world. Also offer them tips, guidelines and support during the process. Intentions are not be used as Objectives or KRAs that the managers wants to get done. The key point about intentions is “helping individuals get into the habit of charting their own course and driving the day-to-day progress themselves”. The idea is that we are fostering autonomy and not managing them.

As a manager, you can view all your reportees intentions and this way through on-going conversation align people’s effort towards the company goals while giving them freedom at individual level.
